Hairstylist Regina makes her way to New York Fashion Week - Regina

A Regina woman heads to New York City for one of the world’s biggest fashion events.

Rocelyn Hodson will be styling her at several shows for New York Fashion Week and she says it’s a dream come true that is coming sooner than she expected.

“I’m a little nervous, but I’m very excited. The emotions are kind of… it’s just really overwhelming, mostly nervous, but there’s also a lot of excitement happening,” she said.

Hodson has worked fashion weeks in Toronto, Vancouver and Saskatchewan and now she’s all set to showcase her talents in the Big Apple.

“I like the feeling of being in a high-energy environment and having team members with you. Everyone just helps, there’s a lot of people, hands-on, one model – there’s just a lot of really high energy.”

She said that she loves making a difference in her client’s life and also making art with her. She talked about the hard work that comes before and after and the steps she takes to create that ultimate after look.

Hodson said it wasn’t easy getting to where she is now and there were some challenges along the way.

“I’ve been told… that as a hairstylist you won’t do much in life, but I’ve certainly proved a lot wrong in that and I’m really excelling,” she said.

“You can do anything you want in life as long as you set your mind to it,” she added.

She said it was kind of a knock-on effect if she started something and kept going after it and as long as she followed the odds it kept working in her favor.

Her journey started in high school when she started doing hers for her friends and family. Once she started hair school, she knew she had found her passion.

Since then, she has competed in competitions, working in salons and backstage for major events such as the Juno Awards.

“There are so many opportunities in the world for any industry you are in. As long as you dream big, you can really do anything in life,” she said.

The pandemic also disrupted many of her plans. It was hard to get through that as she changed from traveling to sitting behind the chair and making her customers happy.

Now that is a thing of the past and she is working on achieving new goals.

After the fashion show in New York, she’s going to Toronto for some big events and waiting for feedback from some of the competitions she’s entered.

“I just want my daughter and all the little girls and women out there to know that whatever you want to do in life, as long as you work hard, you can do it.”
