What’s open and closed in Halifax on Labor Day 2022 – Halifax

September 5 marks Labor Day — a day to celebrate workers’ achievement, raise awareness and continue to advocate for rights.
It’s a special closing day for stores in Nova Scotia and the following closures and changes are in effect:
Retail
Most shops, including supermarkets and shopping centers, will be closed.
NSLC stores will also be closed, although private wine and beer stores may be open.
Some pharmacies may be open but may have limited hours.
Banks are closed.
Bus and Ferry Service
Halifax Transit buses run on the holiday service.
The Woodside Ferry does not run, while the Alderney Ferry runs on a half hour frequency from 07:30 AM to 11:45 PM
Parking
Paid parking on the street is free on Labor Day.
Recreation, Programs and Libraries
All municipal beaches had supervised swimming nearly year-round—except Kearney Lake Beach, Chocolate Beach, and Penhorn Lake Beach—on Aug. 30.
Those beaches will reopen for supervised visits during the Labor Day long weekend from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Emera Oval will open on Sept 5th and material lending is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
All Halifax public libraries are closed, including roadside pick-ups.
Garbage Collection
There will be no municipal solid waste collection on 5 September.
The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax recycling facility and municipal composting facilities will all be closed.
Customer Contact Centers
The 311 Contact Center will operate normally from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Labor Day. However, the two Customer Service Centers that provide personal services and payments are closed.
Canada Post
No mail will be collected or delivered on Labor Day.
